Plan a date for an extreme low tide when one can walk out to the large rocks beside the Oceanfront Arcade in Santa Cruz.
The rocks are encrusted with some of the largest mussels along the coast. Bring a couple of buckets or pails, you and your date, pick the mussels before the tide comes back in [ you should have an hour or so] and trek back to your pad to simmer the mussels in any one of the delicious recipes online. Pick up a loaf of French bread -- a good bottle of wine -- prepare the mussels at sundown -- pack your basket along with some candles -- a portable CD player -- and head back to the beach for a moonllight/candle lilght dinner at the beach -- with soft music as you sit under the stars.
You can watch the seals body surf -- and if you pick the right spot, they should be the only "guests" at your dinner for two.
